Nightscape Moon Venus Mercury Alignment

This evening, just after sunset, the Moon, Venus and Mercury arise low above the Western horizon. Venus still bright but Mercury (north west of Venus) is getting fainter day by day now. Picture taken using Nikon D7500 with limited editing using CS4.

Failed Solargraph Analemma

Bad news! My Solargraph set up for capturing the annual Analemma onfurtunately failed. Last week, due to snow, my homemade shield came loose from the timemechanism. As a result, the capturing of the sun at the same moment was stopped and could not be calibrated any more.



What are the learnings :

1) my home made system seems to work, capturing the beginning of the analemma
2) positioning to the south could be better
3) somehow a piece of the tape came loose on came on the photopaper (white rectavle)
4) set up withstand the storm in January and heavy rainfall without getting wet
5) time module seems to be accurate enough the keep tracking the sun

Based on this learning, I need to figure out how the secure better the timemechanism with the shield. Even the fact I'm dissapointed, I will retry but with a slightly different set up.

Nightscape with Venus & Mercury Alignment

This evening, both planets Venus and Mercury were visible low above the Western horizon. Around 19h15m local time clouds disappeard and Mercury showed up north of bright Venus.

Earliest stars born 180 million years after the Universe began.


After 12 years of experimental effort, a team of scientists, led by Arizona State University School of Earth and Space Exploration astronomer Judd Bowman, has detected indications of the earliest stars in the universe. Using radio signals, the detection provides the first evidence for the oldest ancestors in our cosmic family tree, born a mere 180 million years after the universe began.

An observation profile centred around 78Mhz in the sky-averaged spectrum was discovered. “What’s happening in this period is that some of the radiation from the very first stars is starting to allow hydrogen to be seen," said Rogers. "It’s causing hydrogen to start absorbing the background radiation, so you start seeing it in silhouette, at particular radio frequencies. This is the first real signal that stars are starting to form, and starting to affect the medium around them.”

Govert Schilling's Lecture on the Mysterious Universe

On the evening of March 1, I attended the lecture of The Mysterious Universe by the well know Dutch science journalist Govert Schilling. This happening was organized as part of the Studium Generale lectures at the University of Maastricht.


In the first part a brief overview was given on where are we located (Space), when did this al start (Time) and explaining the relation between our location and time (Space-Time relation). 

The second part covered 9 unsolved mysteries :
     1) How did our Moon originate?
     2) Where is Planet 9?
     3) How unique is Life? 
     4) What are Cosmic Radio Bursts?
     5) What's happening inside a Black Hole?
     6) How did the Baby Universe look like?
     7) What is Dark Matter?
     8) What is Dark Energy?
     9) How unique is our Universe?


Time was flying by and enjoyed listening to the enthusiastic Govert Schilling.
